arrogance. (interplanetary bombings)

So I was listening to the CBC podcast of Quirks And Quarks, and heard something that made me stand up and do a double take. I had to "rewind" and play it again, just to make sure. Then after many expletives, I had to tell someone, but it was in the wee hours of the night, and so i had to send an email to a friend.

THEY ARE PLANNING TO BOMB MARS!

for real, no joke, no bullshit. It was too much trouble to send up another rover-style radio controlled toy, so... what they figured, is BOMB MARS. Their brilliant idea is to send up a copper ball and chuck it at mars, blow up the top crust of the planet, and thereby bypass the whole specific drilling, calculated silliness and create a crater we can then go and explore. Unbelievable. and the worst is that after the host, Bob MacDonald weakly asked about the potential destruction of life, Dr Phil Christiensen of Arizona State University, answered by saying, yeah we may destroy some life on Mars, but we think enough will survive.

I cannot believe the arrogance.

we are making a judgement call and saying our sense of adventure and exploration, and our sense of self-importance, our life is worth more than the lives of others. We are trivializing life, and assuming that our right to it is vastly superior than that of any other planet.

we are planning, what could very well be considered an ACT OF WAR against another planet. it's disgusting. just assume, for an instant that there really is some other intelligent life forms out there, and i use "other" very lightly here. assuming this, what if they were to say the same things about their hypothetical exploration of our planet. that hopefully enough will survive.

the bombing of mars is not shocking. well it is, but really, if you can think of something that is horrible and would change the future of the world in an inappropriate way, i am sure it will happen.

at the same time though, i find myself getting more and more grief from people when i suggest my disagreement with issues pressing the world. something happens, i think it is terrible and i get into a debate. usually i get comments about how it is expected and not shocking (as i contradicted myself with above) or how the economic value is worth it, or how i really can not let myself get worked up over it.

in the end, i get more passive and wonder if i should wish someone good thoughts when they tell me they are pregnant.

on the other hand, it would totally kill their dinosaurs.

well, perhaps you're right, it isn't shocking even to me in the end. however, it DID upset me, in that, although i have accepted our arrogance, towards anything and everything on earth, the idea of bombing another planet, seemed a bit problematic.

then again, you do have a point, as to their dinosaurs.

thank you for commenting though, anonymous.

our impact on mars may be greater than we think - if we don't destroy any possible present life forms, we may create an environment conducive to life on mars. if the impact disturbs the ice on mars, melts it, which subsequently evaporates, we may in fact be creating an atmosphere. one theory on how our earth formed its atmosphere etc is based on a collision between earth and some large random object flying loose in space (hmm, sounds like THOR). but of course we won't know the real impact of our actions for another some billion years.

playing god? still, vb puts it so well, arrogance.

indeed. a good point.

came across this little tidbit, of note perhaps...

bbc news

THOR is supposed to be in 2010, this is next year...

i wonder if they'll use the DU versions here too. (DU is Depleted Uranium, or nuclear waste, or special sauce...)
